Mud & the Shard at the Devil’s Punchbowl

It was a nice mild day, so I ventured into the bottom of the Punchbowl.  It was a bit muddy. A large tree had fallen across the path, maybe a year ago, and is gathering moss, creating green horizontal lines. The path was extremely muddy, deep sucking mud in places.  Probably best to only use this path in the height of Summer? Once out of the mud bath, the terrain changed into open heathland, the gorse and white heather were in flower and the sky opened up to a beautiful blue. Is January really the dullest time of year? The sky was so clear, you could see for miles at the Gibbet on Hindhead Common. The story of the gibbet is fascinating, it’s hard to imagine a dead body hanging there.
